Awards:
To earn a school varsity letter a fencer must actively participate in practices and competitions, display good sportsmanship, and either:
1) Win 50% or more of their bouts in official high school league competitions.
or
2) Be a senior with two or more years of active participation in practices and competitions. Note that Seniors receiving Letter Jackets may be awarded them mid-season (December).
Fulfilling the requirements a second, third, or fourth time will earn the fencer a Varsity Pin.
In addition to the Varsity Letters, the following award certificates are given at the end of season banquet:
Officers receive an award certificate.
The MVP Award for the season goes to the fencer who has earned the highest win percentage in official high school league competitions, in addition to showing good sportsmanship and actively participating in practices and all competitions. If the team is large enough to have both a full Men's Team and Women's Team, then an MVP award will be given to the top fencer for each.
The Robert Ferullo Award (formerly the Rookie of the Year) is similarly awarded to the fencer or fencers with the highest win percentage(s) from among those members in their first year on the team. This award honors the team's second coach, Robert "RJ" Ferullo who coached the team for eleven years.
The Most Improved Award for the season goes to the fencer who's win percentage has the highest increase compared to their previous season.
The Spirit Award goes to the fencer who displays good sports-personship, is encouraging to everyone, and helps the team maintain high levels of morale. The recipient of this award is chosen by the team captain.
The Martin Wohl Award (formerly the Coaches Award) is awarded to a fencer or fencers who go above and beyond all expectations and make an exceptional contribution to the team as a whole. This prestigious award, unlike the previous two, is not guaranteed to be given each year, but rather will only be given when the coaches unanimously believe that a fencer or fencers are clearly deserving. This award honors the team's founder and first coach, Dr. Martin Wohl, who coached the team for ten years.
Lack of participation, poor attendance, and/or lack of good sportsmanship will automatically disqualify fencers from receiving any and all awards.
Awards related to win percentages will not be given to alternates who may have a higher win percentage but a lower number of fought bouts when compared to the starters on the team. For example, a fencer with 14 wins and 1 loss rightly would win the MVP Award over an alternate with 2 wins and 0 losses, despite the alternate having a 100% win rate. Wins by default are considered wins when calculating win percentages for MVP except when default wins would be the fencer's majority of wins. Wins by default are not considered when calculating the win percentages for earning varsity letters or most improved.
